Club Kids Getting Green Fingers!
Thanks to the passion and dedication of Sarah Puffer, a student at Southwestern University, our Garden Club is now in full swing. Early in the Fall of 2011 Sarah came to us with a plan to revitalize our garden as (unfortunately) we had to place an outdoor shed on the site of our previous one! Sarah immediately went about applying for a small grant to offset the cost, and after being successful in this request was able to finally begin working with our members. On MLK day, with the help of children, friends, and a Southwestern Faculty Member, four individual raised bed gardens were built and decorated! Since then, Sarah has been coming to the club regularly to teach club kids how to maintain the garden and has already planted cabbage, onions, and cilantro which seem to be doing well! Our Garden Club Kids have also had the opportunity to leave the club several times. On one occasion, Sarah took a small group to HEB and had them figure out how much it would cost to buy food for one meal. She then had them think about how much money they could have saved if they had the opportunity to grow their own food. What a great activity!

B Ballin' at the Club
Program Director Josh Carrasco has always had a passion for basketball and so recently decided to put this to good use by forming his own Basketball Club. His goal is to increase the overall skill level and knowledge of the game for participants, while still keeping the "fun" in the fundamentals. As a kickoff to the program, Josh was able to secure tickets to the recent Texas v Oklahoma game and so took eight eager club members to watch the game live and get inspired. Also, thanks to Georgetown Sporting Goods, each member of the team was given a nice jersey at no cost to the club or themselves to practice and scrimmage in. Josh plans on running the program up to the end of school and hopes to get the group out to Southwestern University for a "meet and greet" with these collegiate athletes...Last thing, a name, so please welcome the "Stonehaven Wolves"

Club Members Shine at Annual Banquet
On February 23rd, over 300 people attended the 4th Annual Boys and Girls Club of Georgetown's Recognition Banquet but it was the 10 Club Members helping facilitate the event who stole the show. Dressed in Tuxedo's and formal dresses, these participants gave personal testamonies and helped hand out awards to volunteers and donors who had contributed significant time and money to the club in 2011. The Volunteer of the Year Award was renamed "The Bill McEntire Award" in honor of Bill who was a past Board Member and sadly passed away recently. Jon Hoyt receieved this award for his weekly assistance week after week in the Homework Room. The Community Partner of the Year was given to the City of Georgetown for their continued financial support of the club. Also recognized for their significant donations were Troy & Mary Rodriquez and George and Barbara Brightwell. In concluding the event, Board Chair, Dusty Nelms, announced the exciting news that a second location would be opening at McCoy Elementary School at the beginning of the 2012/13 school year . Club staff anticipate that free transportation will be offered for students attending Cooper, Frost, Forbes, and Benold Schools. Further information on this new service will be made available before the end of the current school year.
